Sustainability
We believe that the classroom is only one place where learning can take place. For every academic subject, we want students to have enrichment opportunities outside the classroom where we can develop interest and motivation, challenge our students and experience learning in a practical way.
Campus: A Living Sustainability Lab
Our school campus serves as a dynamic ecosystem where sustainable practices are not just modeled but lived. Key features include:
-
A greenhouse with hydroponics and eco gardens, enabling local food production with minimal environmental impact, teaching about food security.
-
Thriving bee hives, fostering local biodiversity and pollination while producing school-made honey, supporting learning about our interconnectedness with nature.
-
Solar panels that reduce our carbon footprint and serve as an instructional tool for renewable energy education.
-
A comprehensive recycling programme and sustainable waste management systems.
These initiatives are purposefully designed not only to reduce our environmental impact but also to serve as immersive, real-world learning experiences for our students.
Curriculum: Learning with Purpose
Sustainability is woven into our teaching and learning. Our curriculum:
-
Embeds environmental science and sustainability concepts across subjects, from early years to Secondary.
-
Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), our curriculum promotes global awareness and responsibility.
-
Exhibitions empower students to lead inquiry-based projects on food security, water conservation, renewable energy, and recycling, directly tied to hands-on campus experiences.
Real-life learning is at our cor. Students cultivate, harvest, and distribute produce from our greenhouse and gardens to our school cafeteria and student-run Farm Shop, applying science, business, and civic values in creative ways.
Community: Local Roots, Global Reach
Our sustainability vision extends far beyond our school campus:
-
Our students have engaged with Rotary UAE to set up their own Eco Club to network with local businesses to increase our reach to the community
-
Locally, students have planted trees across the UAE, participated in environmental clean-ups, and collaborated with municipal initiatives to enhance green spaces.
-
Worked with University of Birmingham’s BIFoR Project exploring how our forests respond to environmental changes to support government policy.
-
Globally, our students are ambassadors of change, presenting sustainability innovations at COP28 and engaging with government leaders, global businesses, and NGOs to advocate for sustainable practices.
Through these platforms, DIA Barsha students shape conversations on the future of the planet, demonstrating that youth voices are vital in achieving environmental justice.
Student Leadership: Driving Change
Our students are not passive learners—they are leaders and changemakers. From managing eco-clubs to leading awareness campaigns and presenting at international forums, they spearhead all sustainability efforts, building a culture of environmental stewardship that is student-led and community-embedded.
DIA Barsha is not just preparing students for the future—we are preparing them to shape it. Through innovation, engagement, and a shared commitment to the planet, we proudly stand as a beacon of sustainability education and are honored to be considered for the Best School for Sustainability and Environmental Science Award.
